Smoke Of Satan

So, I have been neglecting my blogging while I try to figure out whether the world is ending or not (see my previous post).  My thoughts have run to the reasons why the world seems to be falling apart.  My discovery of the papal encyclical called "Pascendi Dominici Gregis" by Pope St. Pius X written in 1907 provided some possibilities.  The good pope, now a saint, was fighting against something he called the Modernist Heresy.  He explained it in detail in this encyclical and made some pretty drastic recommendations for confronting it.  But, since Vatican II, popes have not often even mentioned it.  Was the heresy defeated?

Turns out many of the theologians sanctioned for this heresy influenced the Second Vatican Council disproportionately.   In 1971, Pope St. Paul VI, summed up the state of the church after the council and the promulgation of the new Mass with these words: "...We would say that, through some mysterious crack--no, it is not mysterious; through some crack, the smoke of Satan has entered the Church of God.  There is doubt, uncertainty, problems, unrest, dissatisfaction, confrontation."

What was this crack?  What was this smoke?  Did it have anything to do with the Modernist Heresy that Pope St. Pius X was confronting?

I concluded it did.  So I decided this is a story people need to know.  What was the modernist heresy and why was this saint fighting against it?  He made his case in this encyclical and I go through it in detail in a series of videos, from the perspective of a layman, a writer of Edgy Catholic Fiction, who is trying to figure out what happened to my church?

Enjoy!
